What’s a Social Justice Mystery?

Most mystery and crime fiction features a lone heroic detective (possibly with a loyal sideDetective Drunellakick or two) who tracks down and captures the criminal, and restores the status quo. A social justice mystery like the Rainwood House series explores mysteries and crimes that can be traced back to the status quo itself. Rather than relying on a super smart individual to figure things out and put things back in order, the characters think together about what is behind the mysteries and problems confronting them. A social justice mystery may have plenty of imagination and whimsy, but its focus is on how activists tackle mysteries great and small with creativity, humor and collective action, not to restore the status quo but to change it.
